Taxes

  • There are three different taxes in Canada.  Federal and Provincial income tax, federal (Goods and Services Tax, or GST) and provincial (PST) sales taxes on purchases, and Municipal taxes on property or business.  The revenue from these taxes is used by the government to pay for health care, education, highway maintenance, public utilities, social safety net, and arts and cultural activities.
  • By April 30th of each year, adults living in Canada must send an income tax return to the federal government. Income taxes are a report of all income you received in the previous year. This report also includes income tax charged by the province. In order to fill in your report accurately help is available.  Check the Yellow Pages for “Tax Return Preparation”. Some community organizations may offer assistance in this area.
  • If you work for an employer, they are required to deduct Canada Revenue Agency payments from your income and remit it to the CRA.
  • If you are self employed, you must pay your own taxes to the government.
  • Visit Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for more information regarding federal income taxes and GST.
  • Sales tax is paid upon purchasing an item and is added to the bill at the point of sale.  Provincial Sales Tax (PST) in Manitoba is 7%; Goods and Service Tax (GST) is 5%.
  • Municipal property taxes are billed by the local government.  These taxes are for home and business owners. A portion of the taxes are school tax.
