Their Vision

A healthier region; stronger individuals, families and communities To respect and work together with communities within the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority to influence positive health behaviours across the lifespan and to promote community well-being by focusing on, but not limiting to, healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco reduction.

Their Role

Their role as health promotion staff is to work with community groups, schools, organizations and public health staff to seek opportunities to improve health.

The Health Promotion Team focuses on the following healthy living areas:

  • Health Protection

  • Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight

  • Community Wellness Screens

Public Health Nurses are partners in well-being. Public Health Nurses work with you and your family to ensure that you have information, skills and support to make decisions about personal and family health. Public Health Nurses work to strengthen communities by:

  • providing health care
  • providing information and resources
  • promoting networks and partnerships
  • promoting use of community resources and programs
  • working with other public health and health promotion staff, and other health care and service providers

Core Health Services Offered By Public Health Nurses

1. Health Protection

Public Health Nurses work to ensure the health and safety of people. They provide investigation, education and immunization to prevent and control disease outbreaks such as E. coli .0157, meningitis, measles, possible rabies exposures.

For example, Public Health Nurses provide:

  • Immunization to infants, children and adults according to Manitoba guidelines.
  • Screening, education, resources and support to prevent, detect, and control infectious diseases.

2. Prevention

Public Health Nurses work to prevent and reduce health problems and improve health outcomes.

For example, Public Health Nurses provide education, counselling, support or referral for:

  • Pregnancy and care for newborns and parents, eg. Prenatal classes and postpartum visits
  • Breastfeeding
  • Healthy growth and development of children including nutrition, speech, hearing and school readiness, eg. Well Baby Clinic
  • Reproductive health (birth control, sexually transmitted infections, emergency contraception, crisis pregnancy
  • Chronic disease prevention to address lifestyle and environment factors
  • Families First
  • Baby Steps… A Healthy Baby Program
  • Health Promotion/Education: Public Health Nurses work with individuals and communities to support and enhance well-being.
    For example, Public Health Nurses may be involved in:
  • Preschool or school wellness fairs
  • Presentations to support the Health and Physical education curriculum
  • Linking clients and community partners with resources to address the factors that affect health
