Government

There are three levels of government in Canada; Federal, Provincial and Municipal.

  • Federal: There are 308 elected members of Parliament from across Canada.  14 are elected in Manitoba. The Federal Government is responsible for defence, immigration, and trade with other countries.  Elections must be held within five years.
  • Provincial:  Approximately every 4 years Manitoba holds a provincial election.  At this time 57 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are elected by the residents of Manitoba.  Each province and territory in Canada has a Legislative Assembly; they are responsible for healthcare, education, agriculture and highways.
  • Municipal:  For every city, town, or village there is a local government known as the municipal government.  The municipal government is responsible for local services, such as police/fire protection, streets, recreation, libraries, water, sewage, and garbage collection.  Municipal elections are held every 4 years; members are elected by the local residents.
  • Laws: You may find that the laws in Canada and Manitoba are different from your own country.  Here you will find more information about laws in Manitoba concerning lawyers, basic Manitoba laws, children’s rights, human rights and the role of our local police.
  • Way of Life: Social standards can be very different from country to country.   You may have different rights.  As a new resident you should be aware of your rights and obligations. Here are some examples of these standards.
  • Many social and economic benefit and incentive programs are provided through The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
